Matt Guild and friends: Grant Thornton exhibition

27/08/2009
30/08/2009

A short exhibition, for three days only, featuring Matt Guild and friends; Michael McCormack, Jane Blackmore, Ann-Marie Jean and Anna Stichbury.

'My works are always about colour and texture. I am influenced by many things, my immediate environment, places I travel, changes of seasons and the transition of time. These themes are always abstract in my paintings and portrayed through the use of layers of colour, textures, patterns and imagery"
"My painting explores the mystery of landscape, its intimacy and immensity. The painted marks and colours become a multitude of interwoven energies, from power to beauty to harmony. The paintings can take you beyond what your eye sees to connect with a richer fuller experience of nature. My favourite works are large scale pieces that envelope you as a forest would, or give you a sense of the immensity of high open mountain tops and vast seas or skies."
"The theme I've been pursuing for the past five years plays with polarity the way a poet plays with words; recognizable yet intriguingly obscure. I believe that the omission of things can be just as powerful as the obvious. I encourage the viewer to be taken with the intangible qualities of the natural landscape and the emotion that the environment evokes."
"My paintings are about light, shadows and reflections. I love capturing the detail, the way a certain object looks in a moment of time, capturing New Zealand icons and pulling on the heart strings, helping us to remember where we have come from."
"I am unsure as to what it is that drives me to paint every day. That is the trutrh. Sometimes I think it's the light shafting across a building and casting evening shadows on the road. I find the effects that light has on colour fascinating. I love shapes of rooftops, pathways disappearing down a hill, the colour of the ocean at the end of a street. These are all sufficiuent to inspire me to paint for a lifetime. One thing I realise is that my paintings are records of my life. They are the place in which I live. My art is about turning brush strokes and colour into a record of my home, whether intentionally or unitentially, it doesn't matter."
