Don Binney - 'Ngataringa Bay Campaign 1972'
litho print poster, NFS
Boat-owning and property interests threatened this significant tidewater space of Auckland's North Shore in the early 1970s. But alternative values and eco-awareness were roused in Devonport, led by Michael Pritchard, a university architecture lecturer. He proposed this poster, which I based on drawings done at Stanley Bay wharf. The final image was completed in London while I was house-minding for a Hampstead psychiatrist; then airmailed. Pied stilt above, Devonport's Mount Victoria centre-image distant, mudflats below. The campaign grew in strength and the proposed marina was scuttled. Thanks are due all these years later to Mike Pritchard – who also made this copy of the poster available for this show. Thirty years after the campaign, I turned the composition into a major oil painting titled Ngataringa Return
