“A Duty of Care” is a combination of two basins; the river and the riverbed of the Wairau, holding between them the rare and endangered Galaxias. Silt from the Wairau River is mixed with compound and sculptured into the base of the work. ‘I get great satisfaction from bringing the physical elements that make up the landscape and applying them in my work. The finished work has both control and spontaneity. A successful amalgamation of form and subject.’ A group of local and national artists produced a body of work Save the Wairau River Inc, is a society incorporated in New Zealand with charitable status eight years ago. Several organizations and individuals had been concerned for some time by continued water applications to abstract surface water from the Wairau. Save the Wairau River Inc was launched by this group of Marlborough residents in June 2005. The application by Trust Power was considered to be a major threat to the future of the ecosystems and the livelihoods that depend on the river.
