A new exhibition of ceramic works by Anneke Borren and introducing the work of Ronald Boersen.
LightSpace Gallery
The works in this exhibition are the result of the time I spent at Driving Creek Railway and Pottery (DCR) in 2023. During my stay I split my time between teaching, working on a collaborative exhibition with Caitlin Moloney and developing a new initiative of my own – the Kauri Bark series.
Called “ Two Birds” the exhibition with Caitlin was exhibited at the DCR Gallery in April and was a truly cross generational collaboration. I threw two copies of a series of different porcelain shapes. One set was completed in my “white line” glaze which emphasises “the spaces in between matter”. Caitlin decorated the second set with her beautiful intricate designs which provide an incredible counterbalance.
The Kauri Bark series was inspired by the DCR environs and Barry Brickell’s planting of 2000 Kauri along with thousands of other native trees and plants. It uses Barry’s clay which is still brought down from the hills on the railway he built . The result is quite different to any of my previous work with the pots being wood fired and made of this very textured clay. The series contrasts the majority of my previous 50 years of work which has been principally electrically fired. The jumping fish design which can be seen on the later pots that were produced towards the end of my time at DCR evolved as I worked on the Kauri bark series.
In this exhibition I am also proud to introduce the work of my good friend Ronald Boersen who specialises in wood, soda and salt firing. At DCR we fired the Phoenix kiln together (one of Barry’s original wood kilns). Ronald is a Dutch born potter who has recently received his residency to live in New Zealand. He is a glaze expert who has previously worked in Israel and Canada and I am sure will make a valuable contribution to the New Zealand Ceramic scene for years to come.
