Exhibition: 31 May - 30 June 2024

This is the fourth themed exhibition that we have invited artists to submit work for during the past nine months and the quality of the response has been breath-taking. The theme of ‘Looking at Ourselves’ was open to broad interpretation. We have works that examine the human form in classic nudes and portraits, but other works are intensely, almost uncomfortably, personal self-examinations.

A highlight of this exhibition has been the opportunity to see different media used to the absolute peak of technical brilliance, whether pastels, charcoal, watercolour, acrylic or oils.

Of works in charcoal, “Lady in Frame” by Yavanna den Harder, ‘Stephen watching NZ v England, 3rd Women’s International’ by Lisa Munnelly, or ‘Rick’ by Jacky Pearson stand out.

For pastels, the level of observation and fidelity to life in Bernadette Ballantyne’s ‘Russel’ and ‘Resting Mum Face’ are arresting.

Tatyana Kulida’s ‘Maori Musician’, Catherine Ward’s ‘The Cartographer’, Laura Olenska’s ‘Study of a foot’ and Ashraf Pirnia’s ‘Innocence’ are each works that reward closer study and appreciation of their technical merits.

The President’s Award goes to “Confronting self” by Michael Hsieh for a contemplative, beautifully executed self-portrait.

The Curator’s Award goes to “Marcus” by Jacky Pearson for a superb portrait that offers a masterclass in the capabilities of watercolour.

Merit Awards went to
  • “In Light’s Embrace” by Xiu Huan Mah for a beautifully observed nude rendered with admirable economy
  •  “Breather” by Justine Turnbull for bravura brushwork in her self-portrait
  • “The Phone” by Vivian McKenna for a delicate and exquisite pen and ink nude
  • “Lady in Frame” by Yavanna den Harder for a clever and almost photographic rendering in charcoal of a seated nude
  •  “Russel” by Bernadette Ballantyne for a hyper-realist portrait in pastels

Congratulations to them all.
