WELLINGTON, NZ:  The New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts (NZAFA) is delighted to announce the presentation of a landmark art event at Tākina Wellington Convention & Exhibition Centre, uniting Aotearoa’s artists, creative spaces, and public art champions under one roof for the very first time.

The Academy Prize for Visual Art: the centrepiece

From August 7 to August 24, Tākina will be home to the nationally anticipated Academy Prize for Visual Art exhibition. Showcasing 350 contemporary artworks by 260 artists from every corner of New Zealand, this prestigious competition not only highlights extraordinary artistic talent but also crowns the winner with a $25,000 grand prize and recognizes five merit awardees with $1,000 each.

Public participation is a highlight, as visitors and online audiences can cast votes to help select finalists alongside three independent selectors. Winners will be announced at a special event, marking a new era for the visibility of visual arts within the capital.

Quoting Wayne Newman, President of NZAFA:

“Tākina is Wellington’s new heart of creativity, and we’re delighted to fill it with the vision, energy, and diversity of New Zealand art. For the first time, our nation’s creative spirit takes centre stage at this world-class venue.” Newman adds:
