The Shoe Mender
“I try to paint a feeling. I love the natural landscape and used to work as a soil scientist. Painting is my way of studying nature. Of particular interest are shadows, with their range of tones, colours, reflected light and edges. This has led me into painting portraits as I can use the way watercolours are so alive when they flow and mingle giving beautiful transparent effects in shadows. Although I paint in other mediums - oils, and charcoal - it is watercolour that particularly gives me the freedom to get those wonderful subtle and seemingly out of control moments."

This painting is the result of being enraptured by the wonderful morning light coming through my shoe-mender's door when I just needed some boots repaired. Denis agreed to pose for me and I worked from a series of photos in my studio. I wanted that chiaroscuro - light and intense dark. It was what was going on in the shadows that affected my decisions for the composition.
Born in UK, Jacky has lived in NZ since 1991 and has been painting watercolours for over 30 years. She is an international tutor, teaching watercolours around the world on Zoom and in in-person workshops. Her style is direct realism, painting on location or in the studio.
Jacky Pearson
Jacky has represented New Zealand in international competitions, including the International Watercolour Exhibition in Moscow in 2021, and is included in the permanent collection of the International Museum of Watercolours in Mexico. She received a merit in the International Watercolour Society 2022 exhibition. She has had a successful worldwide calendar series, “Lighthouses of New Zealand” and has also been published in international art books, magazines and numerous art articles.
