This Artist Showcase exhibition has been extended to incorporate another of the popular and exciting Art Flow: Dine and Discover events organised by DoubleTree by Hilton Wellington in their Grazie Restaurant. In collaboration with Elders Pinot Noir Grazie is offering another intimate evening where fine dining meets artistic expression on 18 April, with guests joining Lynn Blann to explore her artistic inspiration, style and experience.
Wellington-based Lynn Blann and Auckland-based Helen Keen are the third pair of artists participating in the collaboration between DoubleTree by Hilton Wellington and the Academy to present original artworks by contemporary New Zealand artists to visitors to this delightful hotel.
Helen Keen
Working from a studio at the foothills of the Waitākere Ranges, Helen Keen’s encaustic wax paintings resonate with the local flora and fauna while inhabiting the fragmented light of this forested ecosystem. Kaleidoscopic wonderlands de-materialize, shape-shift, and surface patterns melt into surfaces, to give the optical effect of “a panorama containing multitudes.”
This patterning and surface mark-making create painterly echoes of a bygone era, which are recognisable, yet brilliantly fashioned in their individual composition. Each painting is a landscape of folded light, where dream aesthetics fuse elemental forms of shadow and pigment.
Helen Keen’s artistic practice transitioned from ceramicist to discovering the artisanal techniques of working with encaustic wax. Encaustic wax paintings are rarely seen in New Zealand. Based on ancient techniques first developed by Greeks, Romans and Egyptians, encaustic painting was made popular by artists such as Diego Rivera and Jasper Johns.
Traditional paint is not used but rather up to 50 layers of pigmented molten beeswax and tree resin are fused together with flame, then hardened, cured and buffed to a glossy sheen. The result is a texture unlike any other artwork that can be experienced on a tactile level - seen, touched, felt and even smelt.
Hands-on to the point of sculptural, where hands become tools, used to feel and feed the multiple layers, the paintings are literally wrought; brushed, incised, heated and melted into existence.
This difficult yet versatile medium, provides Helen with a foundation for experimentation and an exploratory abstraction where a conversation occurs between artist, artists past and present, and viewer. Each painting encompasses its own unique properties and often incorporates textural layers of varying pigments, collaged materials, and found ephemera. Once tempered, finished paintings distil a soft luminosity rich in blended textures and are often accompanied by the aromatic presence that is inherent in beeswax and damar tree resin.
'Encaustic wax is my passion. It’s an incredible material – not commonly used and made from beeswax and tree resin – it is unpredictable – which I love. The process is the ‘driver’ in my art practice - the unpredictability and nature of the wax and what happens during the heating stage underpins my interest to blend colours, create textures and expressions, reveal, cover and uncover, scratch and sgraffito, embed and transfer images and objects.'
'I'm always looking for new surfaces, tones and tactile textures in my work, sparks of surprise and the unpredictable in the depths of field and focus intrigue me. I'm transforming chaos into calm and tranquility, offering and inviting viewers a sense of soothing and hidden delight woven into translucency'.

Lynn Blann
Lynn Blann worked as a professional musician in Auckland during the late 1960s and 1970s, often in the café’s adjoining art galleries. It was a vibrant and innovative time, driven by the Peace, Anti-War, Women’s and Māori rights movements that inspired many musicians, poets, writers and artists.
The galleries were inspirational spaces featuring the work of then emerging artists such as McCahon, Hanly, Ellis, Driver, Binney, Twiss and others. Her connection to this culture has continued to inspire Lynn, who works in acrylics, charcoals and pastels to create contemporary abstracted forms on canvas.
“My artistic journey comes via Elam, NZ College of Fashion, and Architectural Design connections.
Living in Auckland in the 1970's was vibrant and innovative, driven by the Peace, Anti War, Woman’s and Māori rights movements inspiring musicians, writers, poets and artists to exhibit and perform.
During this time, while working as a professional musician, I frequented the Barry Lett Art Gallery, which was an inspirational space, featuring works by then emerging artists including Hanly, McCahon, Twiss, Ellis, Driver, etc.
It is my close connection to this culture that has always inspired me to paint.
