The Parkin Drawing Prize is Aotearoa New Zealand’s premier award for drawing. It promotes drawing in all its forms – as discovery, a testing of ideas, and decision making.
Founded by arts patron, businessman and philanthropist Chris Parkin, the national drawing prize is now into its twelfth year and has grown into a well-recognised competition not to be missed in the New Zealand arts scene.
The prestigious national prize is $25,000, as well as offering 10 highly commended prizes each worth $500. See below.

About the Judges
Principal Judge
Justin Paton,Director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales
Since 2014 Justin has been the head curator of international art at the Art gallery of New South Wales. Prior to that he had a distinguished career in New Zealand as a curator, writer and art critic. Amongst his many achievements, in 2012 he was awarded the Kathryn Mansfield Menton residency, New Zealand’s pre-eminent award for New Zealand writers.

Lucy Hammonds
Lucy Hammonds has been curator at Dunedin Public Art Gallery since 2015. Born and educated in Auckland she moved to Napier in 2007 where for 8 years she was curator of design and art collections at Museum Theatre Gallery. With expertise in fashion and textiles, Lucy is co-author of The Dress Circle: New Zealand Fashion Design Since 1940./p>
Lizzie Bisley
Lizzie Bisley is the curator of modern art at Te Papa. After studying at the Royal College of Art in London she worked at the Victoria and Albert Museum. While at the V&A she curated a number of exhibitions related to international histories of modernism. Since joining Te Papa, much of her work has focussed on 20th-century women artists. Her research investigates the close relationships between art, design and architecture in the modern period.
Hamish McKay
Hamish McKay has maintained a Wellington Gallery for more than 30 years, introducing artists such as Shane Cotton, Seraphine Pick, Tony de Latour, and the like to the public. Over the years he has represented many of New Zealand’s art legends - Milan Mrkusich, Billy Apple, Tanya Ashken, Ian Scott, among others.

Matt Gauldie
Matt Gauldie is a multi-disciplinary Wellington artist currently living on the Kapiti Coast. He has over twenty years of professional experience working across a wide variety of mediums, such as bronze, oil painting, print-making and illustration.
