Celebrating New Zealand’s rich multicultural ethnic diversity through textiles
Weaves of the World is an exhibition of heritage cultural costumes, textiles and artefacts celebrating the rich multicultural and ethnic diversity of Aotearoa New Zealand.
Throughout history, textiles and accessories have uniquely expressed identity, communicated stories, and reflected centuries-old traditions, values, and beliefs. Standing at the intersection between cultures, textiles bring us together through their beauty and vibrancy and enable us to celebrate diversity.
This exhibition celebrates both the distinctions and similarities between the various multicultural ethnic communities in Aotearoa and highlights how they have been connected by their textiles.
The curation of this exhibition draws from extensive private collections, complemented by contributions of gifted and loaned items from textile enthusiasts and intrepid travellers.
On display are cultural and heritage attires, textiles and accessories from:
- New Zealand - Māori and European
- Pacifica
- Japan (little-known unique weaves)
- Korea
- China
- South East Asia
- Tibet
- Bhutan
- India (special textiles from all regions)
- Pakistan
- Turkmenistan
- Afghanistan
- Middle East
- Africa
- Europe
- Latin America
- North America
The exhibition includes a wide array of wedding and traditional costumes, embroideries, quilts, applique, rugs, kilims, exotic ikats, batik, indigo-dyed fabrics and clothes, tribal wear, hats and caps, and textile treasures from all corners of the world.
Viewing and appreciating the textiles of different cultures can help us to understand and appreciate the richness of the multicultural communities that have made New Zealand their home.
Don't miss out on the opportunity to purchase unique artisanal textiles from our carefully selected collection at the exhibition.
