Star Whales

Wellington-based artist Helen Casey draws her inspiration from the wild and natural world of our island home. Growing up in Scotland and Wellington’s Breaker Bay, she’s fallen in love with Aotearoa’s wild creatures. Her eye-catching intricately detailed art is influenced by her time as a scientific illustrator at Te Papa and her own Celtic culture. The rich textures of starry skies, stormy seas, and our native flora and fauna reveals a love and care in her art that is truly captivating.

A recurrent theme in her art is her envisioning of the seven days of creation where the Cosmos emerges from the Void. It’s a very creative space in which to explore favourite subjects such as Whales, sea life and the night sky. She says “I create because it makes me feel valuable and in doing it for others it produces something of value for them. I put my heart and soul into making a piece of art that lives and breathes and talks to people; that decorates their lives in a way that makes them happier and, I hope, inspires them.”
